What the numbers mean
The grounding rule is the whole game
“Answer only from the provided sources” is the line that separates an assistant from a chatbot that makes things up. Everything else in a prompt is presentation.
Refusals need to be specific
“Be helpful and honest” does not stop a model inventing a refund policy. Naming the categories it must decline, and what to say instead, does.
Say when to hand off, not just that it can
Most prompts mention escalation without defining a trigger, so it never fires. Give it a condition it can actually evaluate.
Tone is the last thing to tune
Personality is easy to change and easy to overvalue. Get grounding, refusal and handoff right first; the voice is a finishing pass.
